Philanthropist Howard Buffett is donating $24 million to South Africa’s parks for a 30-month campaign to stanch the rhino poaching trade, according to a Reuters news report. The goal is to track down poachers using high-tech tools – helicopter, aerostat balloon and sensing devices. Rhino horn is so highly prized in Asia as a traditional medicine that it has a street value of around $65,000 per kilo—more valuable than gold or cocaine. Reuters reporter Pascal Fletcher notes: “ South Africa, which is home to almost all of the world’s rhinos, lost 1,004 of the massive animals to poachers in 2013, compared with 668 the previous year and 448 in 2011.” Buffett is the son of billionaire Warren Buffett.
