Starving sea lion pups are washing up on California beaches, abandoned by their moms who seem to be going farther out to sea, to cooler waters,  to find fish. Over 1,450 pups have washed ashore or are stranded in close-in waters since January. The Pacific Marine Mammal Center is helping with the rescue – a lot of volunteers are working on this—in caring for the pups, who are grossly underweight, with many not ready for solid food. Here’s the New York Times story.

The best way to help right now – unless you’re on hand and can volunteer – is to send a check or appropriate gift card so the PMMC can buy the supplies it needs. Go to the PMMC  web site for information on how to donate – and check out the video of the NBC Nightly News story. On a happier note, there’s a live web cam to watch the orphan seals in the saltwater pool at the PMMC.
